My Most Embarrassing Moments in Fashion and Beauty

With every decade comes a birth of something… unnatural. An exaggeration of something that was once cool, twisted and warped into something truly horrific: massive shoulder pads and razor-sharp blush, “Hammer” pants (which is even embarrassing to type), and the HUGE wall o’ bangs fringe, platform Mary Janes and–one of my favorite love-to-hate moments–the Bobbi Brown look of the 90s.

I actually experienced TWO trendy-at-the-time flashbacks recently. One of them, I am sad to report, was entirely my own doing. I had requested a specific haircut from my stylist (shaved on the sides and long on the top) that would allow me to style a nice pompadour, which looked great, except on the days when I didn’t style it, and I looked like Nick Carter from the Backstreet Boys circa 1998.

Later on, during that week of bad decisions, I also began sifting through the boxes in my attic (re-organizing and making room for new piles of crap that I have decided I cannot part with but no longer want in my immediate vicinity) where I stumbled upon a relic from the Flintstones era: actual photographs! On paper!  That’s when I noticed the hair. “Wow… that looks a lot like my hair right now,” I thought to myself as I looked over a photo of me from the late 90s.

Flash forward a couple more Kodak envelopes and a few more years, and there it was:  a wonderful gem of me with spiked hair (bleached tips of course) wearing one of those silver beaded necklaces that we all thought were somehow… good?

Aye, I had my share of skater shoes and tight shirts (some with Lycra even), baggy pants and wallet chains, silver rings, and those bizarre necklaces. I would even routinely shave off all seven of my chest hairs in an attempt to look more like a model from an Abercrombie and Fitch catalog! Why?! Because I thought it was cool, that’s why!  And no one ever thought to tell me otherwise.

It made me wonder… what fashion and beauty trend will be next? What offensive thing am I wearing RIGHT now that will haunt me years later? Wait… hang on–my low-rise pants are riding a little too low and people are looking at me funny while I’m typing.

What are your worst or funniest memories in fashion and beauty? Any trends that you actually miss and would love to see make a come-back? What do you think will be next on the chopping block of style?

Celebrity Hair & Makeup: Shailene Woodley at 2012 Oscars

March 6th, 2012

Celebrity Makeup News and Blogs:

Need hair and makeup ideas to go with a white dress? Take a cue from Shailene Woodley, who totally nailed the look at the 84th Annual Academy Awards with a Valentino Couture gown, sultry coppery shadow and chic chignon.

Shailene Woodley hair and makeup at 2012 Oscars
Makeup
“Today is a special day for Shailene and so I wanted to use a little more makeup than what she typically wears,” says makeup artist Stephen Sollitto working for Hourglass Cosmetics. “Her look is about luminous skin, defined eyes and a sophisticated palette of coppers and bronzes. She looked exquisite yet still young, fresh and fashionable.”

Stephen began by prepping Shailene’s skin with Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer to create a smooth canvas for makeup and ensure a flawless finish with real longevity. He followed with Hourglass Illusion Tinted Moisturizer in Shell, which imbues skin with luminosity, and Hidden Corrective Concealer in Fair, an undetectable cover-up.

To add warmth, he contoured Shailene’s cheekbones with Hourglass Superficial Waterproof Bronzer, a silky powder that withstands high humidity, sweeping the product to her temples, hair line, nose and chin. He then applied a dusty rose blush and finished with the highlighter from Hourglass Illume Crème-to-Powder Bronzer Duo in Bronze Light for a gorgeous glow.

Stephen lined her eyes with Hourglass Calligraphy Liquid Eye Liner in Cognac, a rich brown shade. Before adding eye shadow, Stephen applied Hourglass Film Noir Full Spectrum Mascara to gauge the darkness of her eyes. He also swept Hourglass Film Noir Lash Lacquer at the roots of the lashes for drama, thickness and inky black sheen. Stephen then covered the entire lid of the eye with the cream shimmer shade of Hourglass Visionaire Eye Shadow Duo in Suede to reflect light. Last, he applied the copper shade from Hourglass Visionaire Eye Shadow Duo in Gypsy for a dose of dramatic color.

Stephen lined the lips with Hourglass Trace Lip Liner in Bare, and followed with Hourglass Prodigy Hydrating Lip Gloss in Eden for a peachy beige sheen.

Hair
Hair stylist Campbell McAuley gave Shailene a ’70s style textured chignon with a Moroccan twist to mirror the textures of her dress.

1. Starting with wet hair, apply Matrix Total Results Amplify Wonder Boost Root Lifter to give the base of the hair volume.

2. Blowdry hair with a round brush to smooth the texture.

3. Set hair in Velcro rollers for one hour.

4. Remove rollers, brush out curls and worked Matrix Total Results Sleek Silk Wonder Smoothing Oil from roots to end for shine.

5. Gather all hair into a textured ponytail at the crown of the head.

6. Twist small sections of the ponytail and wrap them up to the base of the hair to make a round shape.

7. Half way through, wrap remaining sections around the round shape to give it a criss-cross texture.

8. Finish with Matrix Design Pulse Hard Lock Hairspray to hold the style in place.

Nails
For Shailene’s nails, Celebrity Manicurist Nettie Davis used a mix of essie’s Ballet Slippers and Au Natural to create a light, neutral manicure. “I wanted to create a simple nail to complement Shailene’s mod 70s style dress. I created a neutral beige mixing Ballet Slippers and Au Natural,” stated Davis.

Dior National Artist Jeffrey Sanchez, Favorite Beauty Products and Makeup Tips

August 5th, 2011

Celebrity Makeup News and Blogs:

<p style=”text-align:center;”><a rel=”nofollow” target=”_blank” href=”http://www.faboverforty.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/DSC_0012.jpg”><img class=”size-full wp-image-18314 aligncenter” title=”Jeffrey Sanchez” src=”http://www.faboverforty.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/DSC_0012-531×800.jpg” alt=”” width=”319″ height=”480″/></a></p>
<p style=”text-align:left;”>A few weeks ago I had the pleasure and honor to work with Dior National Makeup Artist, Jeffrey Sanchez.   Whenever I have the opportunity to meet a national artist from a beauty line I take advantage of it when I can.  A person can learn so much from them even if it’s one tip it’s usually a priceless one.  So my advice to you – if you want to learn more about how to apply your makeup and if you walk away just learning one thing, it is well worth it.</p>
<p style=”text-align:left;”><a rel=”nofollow” target=”_blank” href=”http://www.faboverforty.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/DSC_0067.jpg”><img class=”aligncenter size-medium wp-image-18317″ title=”Jeffrey’s makeup bag” src=”http://www.faboverforty.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/DSC_0067-300×199.jpg” alt=”” width=”300″ height=”199″/></a></p>
<p style=”text-align:left;”>I’m always curious what a national artist such as Jeffrey, carries in their makeup bag – the bag of magical must-haves as I call it.   Jeffrey travels nearly every week of the year – quite a schedule!  So what he uses has to work not only for him as an artist, but product that he knows will work for his clients too.</p>
<p style=”text-align:left;”>Alongside his <strong><a rel=”nofollow” target=”_blank” href=”http://www.dior.com/beauty/usa/en/make_up_and_cosmetics_by_christian_dior_lipstick_m/accessories/accessories/lbrushes.html “><span style=”color:#000000;”>Dior brushes</span></a> </strong>that are a staple in his makeup bag, he has a few other Dior products that happen to be some of my favorites as well!   I overheard Jeffrey telling someone why the Dior eyeliner brush is better and different than most – the edges are tapered to be able to move the brush from side to side as well as straight on to be able to get product wherever it is needed.  Most eyeliner brushes are flat or straight without tapered edges so you have to put the product straight onto the lash line rather than being able to move your wrist around and follow the natural curve of the eye.</p>
<p style=”text-align:left;”>Some other products that are favorites are <strong><a rel=”nofollow” target=”_blank” href=” http://www.dior.com/beauty/usa/en/make_up_and_cosmetics_by_christian_dior_lipstick_m/face/concealers/y0880600/py0880600.html”><span style=”color:#000000;”>Skinflash Primer</span></a> </strong>- I agree with this one as well, it’s my all-time favorite primer and I’ve written about it here on <strong><a rel=”nofollow” target=”_blank” href=” http://www.faboverforty.com/beauty/dior-skinflash-primer/”><span style=”color:#000000;”>Fab Over 40</span></a> </strong>before.  It leaves your skin radiant and soft and on the days you don’t want to wear any foundation, it evens out the skin to give it a flawless look on its own.   Jeffrey said he likes to mix it with a little bit of Skinflash or Nude Concealer where needed.</p>
<p style=”text-align:left;”><strong><a rel=”nofollow” target=”_blank” href=”http://www.dior.com/beauty/usa/en/make_up_and_cosmetics_by_christian_dior_lipstick_m/eyes/eyebrows/ultra-fine-precision-brow-pencil/py0726130.html “><span style=”color:#000000;”>Brow Styler</span></a></strong> is also another product he uses on everyone.  Nearly all of us can use help in the brow area, whether it’s just filling in a little sparse area or helping them to look more full overall, and the Brow Styler works for all brow shades.  I’ve also written about this in the past, <strong><a rel=”nofollow” target=”_blank” href=” http://www.faboverforty.com/beauty/dior-brow-styler-how-does-it-rate/”><span style=”color:#000000;”>here</span></a></strong><span style=”color:#000000;”>.</span> My own little side story on this product – I recently spent the weekend with my sisters and we were doing makeup applications one morning and I used this on one of my sisters who over time has over plucked her brows and now they don’t grow in (a common mishap).   The rest of my family kept on commenting on how having her brows filled in changed the whole look of her face and how much better and natural her brows looked.  So ladies – brows do make a huge difference!</p>
<p style=”text-align:left;”>A third must-have product he always carries in his makeup bag is <strong><a rel=”nofollow” target=”_blank” href=” http://www.dior.com/beauty/usa/en/make_up_and_cosmetics_by_christian_dior_lipstick_m/lips/gloss/the-expert-gloss/spin-on-lacquer-smoothing-glow/py0027090.html”><span style=”color:#000000;”>Dior Addict Lip Polish</span></a></strong>.   It’s a gloss with a soft-as-silk formula and the sponge tip rolls along the lips so it glides on easily.  One of the things I love about Dior glosses is that they are never, ever sticky or tacky.  Jeffrey especially likes this on women over 40 as it glides over the lips, even if you have lip lines there are microspheres that plump up and pull out the fine lines and cracks.</p>
<p style=”text-align:left;”>One item we didn’t discuss, but I noticed he used on nearly every one is the <strong><a rel=”nofollow” target=”_blank” href=” http://www.dior.com/beauty/usa/en/make_up_and_cosmetics_by_christian_dior_lipstick_m/eyes/eyeliner/long-wear-waterproof-eyeliner-pencil/py0803050.html”><span style=”color:#000000;”>Crayon Waterproof Eyeliner </span></a></strong>in Trinidad Black.  This liner is very smooth and creamy and stays put!</p>
<p style=”text-align:left;”>A few of Jeffrey’s favorite skin care products are the <strong><a rel=”nofollow” target=”_blank” href=”http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=549259&amp;CategoryID=8424#fn=sp%3D1%26spc%3D35 “><span style=”color:#000000;”>Capture Totale Radiance Enhancer</span></a></strong>, which he absolutely loves!  It gives a glow to the skin, which is so important.   The skin looks healthy and it neutralizes irregularities in the skin.   It helps prevent oxidation of skin cells which in turn helps your skin cells to live longer – which gives your skin that healthy glow.   It also helps to take the redness out of the skin.</p>
<p style=”text-align:left;”><strong><a rel=”nofollow” target=”_blank” href=” http://www.dior.com/beauty/usa/en/skin_care_by_christian_dior_face_care_body_care_su/face-skincare/global_anti_ageing_skincare/capturetotaledaynight/y0623535/py0623535.html”><span style=”color:#000000;”>Capture Totale Night Creme</span></a></strong> – he also swears by Capture Totale Creme during the day, but especially loves the night cream.  It contains 3 x the potency of Vitamin C and night cream is specific to working with our body’s natural repairative state.  I use this and love it.  It’s very hydrating and the texture is amazing.  I can definitely tell on my skin when I’ve skipped using this.</p>
<h4 style=”text-align:left;”><em>I asked Jeffrey for a few tips for women over 40 and here’s what he had to offer:</em></h4>
<p style=”text-align:left;”>If someone tells a woman over 40 she can’t wear shimmer on her eyes it is FALSE!   In fact he’s adamant about using it.   Dior’s shimmer in their eyeshadows isn’t harsh and it’s made to look like more of a glow.  It gives the eye area a healthier, smoother look.   When I asked him about glittery shadows he said you can even get away with it as well, just respect the amount you are applying.   That statement really stuck with me on many levels of beauty products – respect the amount you are applying.  I may steal that saying as my new mantra!</p>
<p style=”text-align:left;”>Jeffrey suggested that women should not be afraid of lining under the eyes – it can make the eye look bigger, too.   Just make it a soft line rather than a harsh line.</p>
<p style=”text-align:left;”><a rel=”nofollow” target=”_blank” href=”http://www.faboverforty.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/DSC_0087.jpg”><img class=”aligncenter size-medium wp-image-18319″ title=”Lip Color” src=”http://www.faboverforty.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/DSC_0087-300×199.jpg” alt=”” width=”300″ height=”199″/></a></p>
<p style=”text-align:left;”>&nbsp;</p>
<p style=”text-align:left;”>Jeffrey also loves to use color on the lips especially for summer.  These are some of his favorite shades from the<strong><a rel=”nofollow” target=”_blank” href=” http://www.dior.com/beauty/usa/en/make_up_and_cosmetics_by_christian_dior_lipstick_m/lips/lipsticks/dior-addict/y0028600/py0028600.html”><span style=”color:#000000;”> Dior Addict Lipstick</span></a></strong> line – from top – 635 Miami,  682 Gibraltar and 750 Rock &amp; Roll.</p>
<p style=”text-align:left;”>He also said that there is no way that one rule applies to every single person.  Do what is right for you and don’t be afraid to experiment with something you haven’t tried before – you may be surprised!</p>
<p style=”text-align:left;”>Thanks Jeffrey!   I know I learned some wonderful things from you and I think the Fab Over Forty readers have as well!</p>
