Laneige Snow BB Soothing Cushion SPF 50/PA+++ Foundation Review, Swatches and Photos

July 11th, 2014

Celebrity Makeup News and Blogs:

Per a reader’s recommendation, I decided to try out Laneige Snow BB Soothing Cushion SPF 50/PA+++, one of the most popular air cushion foundations from Korea.

Laneige Snow BB Soothing Cushion Foundation SPF 50+ PA+++ review

Laneige Snow BB Soothing Cushion Foundation SPF 50+ PA+++

Like the IOPE Air Cushion XP SPF50+/PA+++ Foundation I loved, the Laneige Snow BB Soothing Cushion SPF 50/PA+++ Foundation came in a portable white compact about 2.75 inches in diameter and 1.25 inches thick. Flip open the lid and you have a mirror on top and a bottom part that is split into two compartments – an upper one for storing a puff applicator and a lower one that holds a sponge (or “cushion”) soaked in a super runny foundation. To apply the foundation, you press the puff applicator into the cushion then pat directly onto skin.

The 5-in-1 formula contains:

* White Plus Renew Complex (Bead Tree extract, Korean thistle and Natto), the major ingredient of Laneige White Plus Renew, for bright and clear skin.
* SPF 50+/PA+++ to block out UVA and UVB rays.
* Soothing ingredients and cooling sensation that lowers skin temperature by 3 degrees Celsius to perk up tired skin.
* Elastic cushion powder against sweat and sebum for long-lasting wear.
* Spherical powder to control oil and prevent excess shine.

The foundation applied smoothly with ease and did not feel as moisturizing as the IOPE. The finish, though less dewy, was skin-like nonetheless. There was also a pretty strong scent, which you pretty much can’t avoid with Korean makeup and skincare products.

Color selection wise, it was better than IOPE. There are 4 shades to choose from – #13 True Beige, #21 Natural Beige, #23 Sand Beige and #31 Brown Beige – which all run darker and warmer. On my NC30 skin, I use #C23 Cover Beige for the IOPE and was able to get away with #21 Natural Beige for the Laneige.

As for the coverage, it was on the lighter side. A few dabs evened out my skin nicely but I definitely need concealer over problem areas. And while the foundation did wear well on my dehydrated combo skin, there was shine on my T-zone after 5-6 hours, which I did not see with the IOPE.

All in all, Laneige Snow BB Soothing Cushion SPF 50/PA+++ Foundation was a decent cushion foundation that was easy to use and provided natural, skin-like coverage. But for now, I will stick to IOPE.

What Product Offers the Highest Sun Protection?

August 10th, 2012

Celebrity Makeup News and Blogs:

Post image for What Product Offers the Highest Sun Protection?

Verina asks…Dear Beauty Brains, you bring rationality to the cosmetics industry, a feat which deserves the Nobel Prize, along with my undying gratitude.

I am trying to find a cream or primer to use under makeup that offers the highest sun protection available. I am considering mainly mineral sunscreens, since many of the chemical ingredients irritate my skin. I have narrowed it down to:

MAC Prep+ Prime (SPF 50 with active ingredients: zinc oxide 16.10%, octinoxate 7.50%)

Fasio Zero Expert UV Primer (SPF 50 with active ingredients  ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate 7.49%, phenylbenzimidazole sulphonic acid 2.50 WW%, zinc oxide 15.36 WW%.)

I await your words of wisdom…..and what the hell kind of sun protection is phenylbenzimidazol sulphonic acid?

Alchemist responds (from the Beauty Brains Forum):

It’s impossible to tell which actually provides more sunprotection from the active ingredients, especially when they are so close in composition (ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate & octinoxate are the same thing, the first one is the INCI name, the second is the USA drug name). SPF is very heavily influenced by the other ingredients in the formulation and production methods. The type and size of the Zinc Oxide will also have a big effect. Given that both claim SPF 50 both must have a tested SPF of 50 or above.

Phenylbenzimidazole sulphonic acid is better known in the USA as ensulizole. It’s a water soluble UVB sunscreen that is neutralised in situ (usually with TEA or Sodium Hydroxide)

Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation SPF 15 Review, Photos and Swatches

May 5th, 2011

Celebrity Makeup News and Blogs:

When one of my makeup buddies raved and raved about Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation SPF 15, I decided to find out what it was all about.

Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation SPF 15
The Skin Foundation comes in a 30ml glass bottle with a pump. It contains light-reflective optics to blur away flaws and a blend of Glycerin and Sodium Hyaluronate to attract moisture to skin and lock it in. It also offers broad spectrum UV protection with SPF 15.

There are 17 shades available to cover a wide range of skintones. For my NC30 skin, I use 4.25 Natural Tan, which is a yelllow-based shade a tad darker than my natural skintone.

Compared to most liquid foundations, the texture of this foundation is runnier and thinner, kind of like RMK Liquid Foundation. It spreads easily and applies smoothly, leaving behind a soft, satiny finish.

Coverage-wise, it is light to medium. It evens out my skin beautifully and gives it a radiant, dewy look without ever looking or feeling fake. The foundation does, however, have a tendency to dry quickly so you got to be quick in blending it. I like to squeeze one pump on the back of my hand then apply in a patting motion on half of my face before working on the other half.

Another thing I love about this is the longevity. The foundation wears extremely well with zero fading or shine, even without a setting powder on top.

Highly recommended for young skin or if you are looking for a light-weight, natural-looking foundation with light to medium coverage.

Overall Rating:

Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation SPF 15 is available at Sephora, Nordstrom and www.bobbibrowncosmetics.com for $45.
