Get Katy Perry’s Makeup Look at 2014 VMAs!

August 28th, 2014

Celebrity Makeup News and Blogs:

At the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards, singer Katy Perry looked “quintessential Katy” in her signature bright red lips, black liquid liner and big lashes. Get the breakdown of the look straight from her makeup artist Jake Bailey!

Katy Perry Makeup look at 2014 Video Music Awards
“I first prepped her skin and then matched her skin tone to CoverGirl Ready, Set Gorgeous Foundation in Warm Beige and began by buffing a thin layer all over her face and neck using a flat tipped, soft bristled kabuki style brush for a seamless airbrushed effect. I highlighted her under eye area and cheekbones with CoverGirl Ready, Set, Gorgeous Concealer in Light/mMdium.

I began her eye makeup by blending a warm brown shadow, CoverGirl Flamed Out Shadow Pot in Scorching Cocoa into the crease of her eyelids and a pearlescent white shadow CoverGirl Flamed Out Shadow Pot in Blazing White onto her eyelid and browbone for highlights. I also dusted some of that same pearlescent shadow onto the ridge of her cheekbones for an extra glow. I then created a sharp jet black cat eye using CoverGirl Bombshell Intensity Liner. I finished the eye look with several coats of CoverGirl Bombshell Volume Mascara.

I then sculpted her cheekbones using the darker shade from the CoverGirl Clean Glow Blush compact and added warmth to the apples of her cheeks with the paler peachier shades in the compact.

I completed the look by lining her lips with CoverGirl LipPerfection Lip Liner in Hot and the matching CoverGirl LipPerfection Lip Color shade in Hot 305. I topped the lipstick with a coat of CoverGirl Flamed Out Shadow Pencil in Crystal Flame for a metallic sheen. Just before she left I dusted her with a touch of CoverGirl Ready, Set, Gorgeous Powder in light/medium to keep her looking fresh for the red carpet.”

CoverGirl is available at drugstores nationwide and drugstore.com.

The Makeup Show Chicago 2013 Recap

June 14th, 2013

Celebrity Makeup News and Blogs:

A few days ago, I attended The Makeup Show Chicago 2013 at Bridgeport Art Center. Just like last year, the show was PACKED with talents, fun people and lots of goodies. Read on to see more pics from the show and a few makeup tips from the pros.

NARS makeup artist Phuong Tran demonstrating how to create a smoky eye with nude lips at The Makeup Show Chicago 2013
Makeup artist Phuong Tran working for NARS Cosmetics created luminous skin and strongs brows with the most gorgeous smoky eye and nude lips above, courtesy of NARS Belle du Jour Velvet Matte Lip Pencil and my favorite nude color NARS Isola Bella Satin Lip Pencil. Phuong explained that makeup should not confined by rules and that it is Francois Nars’ practice to always do the complexion first. To create the smoky eye, Phuong started by coloring the eyelid with an eyeliner and adding eyeshadow on top before dabbing NARS Multiple over it for a glossy effect. Her trick to using Multiples? Warming it up with the fingers than patting it on.

Lori Taylor from Smashbox makeup demonstration at The Makeup Show Chicago 2013
Lori Taylor, Global Pro Lead Arist for Smashbox, shared with us some of her beauty favorites and showed us how to transfer red carpet beauty to every day. Her must-haves for creating that California “bronzy golden skin” she loves? Smashbox Photo Finish Luminizing Foundation Primer in Hydrating and Luminizing. Lori also likes to add a touch of matte bronzer on the cheekbones to warm up the complexion before anything else. She pointed out that a strong brow paired with a bright lip is the “it” thing in Hollywood right now.

Maurice Stein from Cinema Secrets makeup demonstration at The Makeup Show Chicago 2013

Cinema Secrets’ founder Maurice Stein returned this year to demonstrate how to camouflage discolorations with makeup. He showed us a “rock ‘n roll” method on how to apply loose powder. First, you put the product onto a powder puff, fold into half to squeeze out excess than dab onto the skin in a rocking and rolling motion before finally laying a powder brush flat onto the skin to swipe off excess. To prevent makeup melt-downs on set, Maurice does not use moisturizers with makeup (most moisturizers contain oil of some sort and will cause the makeup to slide right off). He likes to set his makeup with water and he stressed the importance of setting foundation and concealer instantly with loose powder to prevent creases.

Makeup artist Valerie P. Garcia from Obssessive Compulsive Cosmetics created an editorial look. She believed that editorial beauty is about being “organic” and going with the flow. The best tip from her? Using an Extra Virgin Olive Oil spray to set the look – now that’s a new one!

The Makeup Show’s very own James Vincent too shared a few tips during the Blogger Preview Party. To get the most luscious lashes, James suggested applying a lengthening mascara in the center of the lashes then adding a thickening one on the inner and outer corners. For a flushed cheek, nothing beats applying a stained gloss (James loves the new OCC Stained Gloss Lip Tar) on the apples of the cheeks UNDER your foundation.

Anastasia Holiday 2012 Want You To Want Me Set Review and Swatches

November 14th, 2012

Celebrity Makeup News and Blogs:

Besides the Kisses On My List Volume 2 Hydrafull Gloss Set I reviewed previously, Anastasia brings us a gorgeous limited-edition eye set, Want You To Want Me Makeup Set, for Holiday 2012.

Anastasia Holiday 2012 Want You To Want Me Set review
Packaged in a 5″ by 5″ velvet black box with a magnetic clip, the Want You To Want Me Set ($34) comes with a 9-eyeshadow palette, Liquid Eye Liner, Mini Clear Brow Gel and dual-ended shadow brush.

The Eyeshadow Palette comes with 9 Illumin8 Eyeshadows in a gorgeous selection of nude and purple shades in both matte and shimmer finishes. Just like the full-sized Illumin8 shadows, these applied smoothly with great color payoff and stayed on nicely for hours without creasing or fading.

The Liquid Liner comes with a long, thin brush that allows great precision. I loved the super intense black color but the staying power could be better. Even on my dry skin, the swatch smudged once I rubbed it and with just a bit of water, it faded completely.

Finally, the Mini Clear Brow Gel, which is 1/3 of Anastasia’s signature Brow Gel. It is enhanced with chamomile and did a great job setting my brows without making them stiff.

Laura Mercier Holiday Collection 2011

November 10th, 2011

Celebrity Makeup News and Blogs:

This year I am torn up about the Laura Mercier Holiday Collection.  Because I want it all!  Seriously, there isn’t one piece in this whole holiday makeup collection that I don’t absolutely love!

So lets start with the two large sets above which are $98 each. On the very top is the Luxe Color Portfolio which includes 6 eye shadows, 3 liners, a shimmer/blush powder and a blush powder. Along with that you get 3 eye shadow brushes too.   The base is a hard brown fabric case trimmed with a snakeskin print.  Shown on the bottom is the Luxe Eye Portfolio and it includes 12 eye shadows, some of which can be used as liners and three brushes.  The hard case of this one is an all-over snakeskin print.  Very chic.

I bit the bullet and purchased the Luxe Color Portfolio and I haven’t been disappointed once.   As you can see, I even used it before I took photos because I had a family wedding to attend out of town and I knew I wouldn’t get the images taken beforehand.  This is definitely a set that can be used past the holiday season and into any time of the year.   The browns, taupes, plums, pinks and rose tones of the eye shadows are very, very pretty.   They have a nice shimmer to them – not glittery and really a nice glow to them.   The three liners in brown, black and plum work for any look and the eye liner brush include is perfect for doing the tightline liner technique.  I like to use the light pink blush for a shimmer and the more vibrant pink shade as the blush.  When applied lightly, the bright pink shade is not overpowering, but just a nice flush of color.   The three brushes are great quality and although it says they are mini brushes – they handles are not very short and the brush heads are full sized.

Above is one of the Petite Eye Color Trios.  This one is Smoky Mauve and there are two others – Smoky Taupes and Smoky Neutrals.  On my hand is the Smoky Mauve swatched.   These mini sets are only $25 each and do not include a brush.  They are tiny enough to put in a small clutch and take with you for touch ups that might be needed throughout the night, or even as a great set to keep in your desk.   Perfect for a day to evening look.

Laura Mercier Mini Lip Glace Sets

For the lips, she created this mini lip glacé set with five high shine colors.  The range of shades are from L-R Rose (shimmer), Blush, Quartz (shimmer), After Hours (shimmer) and Sparkling (shimmer).  This set of 5 minis sells for $48 – great to keep for yourself or share as stocking stuffers.  They have in them anti-aging, plumping and anti-oxidant ingredients – we all love that!

More of her holiday includes an eyeliner set, baked eye color palette and a fabulous makeup brush set.

Baked Eye Palette $48

While normally I am not a big fan of dual ended brushes, since these come in a case I don’t mind that they are dual ended.   So in all you get nine brushes for a whole face look encased in this chic snakeskin bag for $85.

Along with all this wonderful beauty, Laura Mercier has her yummy, luscious bath and body sets for holiday too!
