My Most Embarrassing Moments in Fashion and Beauty

With every decade comes a birth of something… unnatural. An exaggeration of something that was once cool, twisted and warped into something truly horrific: massive shoulder pads and razor-sharp blush, “Hammer” pants (which is even embarrassing to type), and the HUGE wall o’ bangs fringe, platform Mary Janes and–one of my favorite love-to-hate moments–the Bobbi Brown look of the 90s.

I actually experienced TWO trendy-at-the-time flashbacks recently. One of them, I am sad to report, was entirely my own doing. I had requested a specific haircut from my stylist (shaved on the sides and long on the top) that would allow me to style a nice pompadour, which looked great, except on the days when I didn’t style it, and I looked like Nick Carter from the Backstreet Boys circa 1998.

Later on, during that week of bad decisions, I also began sifting through the boxes in my attic (re-organizing and making room for new piles of crap that I have decided I cannot part with but no longer want in my immediate vicinity) where I stumbled upon a relic from the Flintstones era: actual photographs! On paper!  That’s when I noticed the hair. “Wow… that looks a lot like my hair right now,” I thought to myself as I looked over a photo of me from the late 90s.

Flash forward a couple more Kodak envelopes and a few more years, and there it was:  a wonderful gem of me with spiked hair (bleached tips of course) wearing one of those silver beaded necklaces that we all thought were somehow… good?

Aye, I had my share of skater shoes and tight shirts (some with Lycra even), baggy pants and wallet chains, silver rings, and those bizarre necklaces. I would even routinely shave off all seven of my chest hairs in an attempt to look more like a model from an Abercrombie and Fitch catalog! Why?! Because I thought it was cool, that’s why!  And no one ever thought to tell me otherwise.

It made me wonder… what fashion and beauty trend will be next? What offensive thing am I wearing RIGHT now that will haunt me years later? Wait… hang on–my low-rise pants are riding a little too low and people are looking at me funny while I’m typing.

5 Expert Tips for Prom Makeup

While I don’t do prom looks much anymore, in high school it wasn’t uncommon for me to have an hour or two set aside before each dance for doing my friends’ makeup.  Here are some of the earliest lessons that I learned on my own… all those many, many, many, many, many years ago.

PROM TIP #1: Pick one, lips or eyes?

The simplest way to start your makeup look is to choose an area to focus on: lips or eyes. In beauty makeup, you typically focus on one and downplay the other to create a natural balance. Want to wear a bold and dramatic eye look? Pair it with a muted lip instead of a bold one. Just remember that “muted” doesn’t mean concealer-mouth, land of the dead lips either! Über pale lips can be just as “bold” as bright red ones.

PROM TIP #2: Play up your best features.

If you can’t decide on an area to focus on, think about your favorite features. Every girl I’ve ever known has had a part of their face they love best. Usually, it’s lips or eyes (often we will draw attention to these areas when talking to someone we’re attracted to by placing a pen near the mouth or resting fingertips at the temples, “pointing” at the eyes). If you have an area of your mug that you love most, then choose that as the focal point for your makeup.

PROM TIP #3: Match the frame with the painting, not with the furniture.

Nothing is stopping you from matching your eyeshadow to your dress (lots of women do), but if you find yourself struggling, choose colors that complement your natural coloring (hair, eyes, and skin) instead. It will look more effortlessly flattering. One of MY favorite beauty books is “Color Me Beautiful” by Carole Jackson. It’s an oldie, but believe it or not, still has some solid tips for matching your makeup to your coloring (it’s also a really fun read, especially if you can get your hands on one of the original editions from the 70s)!

PROM TIP #4: What to bring in your purse.

Blot papers instead of powder help keep the shine under control without adding layer upon layer of powder, which will build up and look cakey.  But do bring powder, though, because it is a good idea to use it right before photos are taken, along with lipstick and/or gloss, cream concealer for emergencies, travel-size can of hairspray, breath mints, and make sure something you have has a mirror in it!

PROM TIP #5: Photo time!

Avoid MSF-style, high-shine powders when you’re doing your makeup. A natural glow is good (I LOVE shine on the skin), but if you’re going to have photos taken, you run the risk of looking greasy or sweaty instead of glowing. Matte is always a safer bet for photos (especially conveyor-belt style photography like you’ll find at a dance). Pick your foundation and powder carefully. Products with a SPF rating often use ingredients like titanium dioxide in them that will bounce light back in flash photography, making you appear several shades lighter than you are.

Most of all, remember that being comfortable is one of the most important parts of looking good. If you feel uneasy in bright red lipstick, it will show, and you won’t have a good time. It doesn’t matter what anyone else things as long as you like it! Oh… but also… Don’t dress like a baby hooker! You know who you are. I’ve seen you at the mall on prom night looking like the first 15 minutes of Pretty Woman. It’s not grown-up looking and the rest of us talk about you behind your back. Yes… yes, we do. Have fun!

Welcome to Fab Over Forty Dior Spring Collection 2012 – Garden Party Color Collection

I went to a garden party to reminisce with my old friends…

Dior Spring Collection 2012 called Garden Party Color Collection is just hitting stores this January.  It’s hard to believe that Spring Collections are here when the calendar just flipped over to 2012, but they are here. This Dior collection is inspired by the fantastic Granville garden of Christian Dior. Located on the cliffs of Normandy, the elements of strong winds seemed unsuitable for a garden, but his creative strength and relentless hard work defied nature. Today one can still admire the garden in bloom and in particular, the fantastic rose garden planted by Christian Dior’s own hands. It sounds lovely and wouldn’t it be fun to have a party there, like he used to host many years ago!

 

 

To me the star piece in the collection is the pale pink minaudiere.  For Holiday 2010 they created a minaudiere similar to this in black and with a ball clasp, now for spring 2012 it is a pale pink version and a double rose clasp adorns the top instead. Inside you will find a full mirror on the one side and three eye shadows, a Lip Maximizer and an Ultra Gloss on the other.  The lip products are protected by a silver flap door so no shadow residue will get in.  It’s available in two color families – the grey shades (top) are a Nordstrom and Dior.com exclusive and the brown/pink one (bottom) is more widely available. $75 each

There are also 2 limited edition 5 Couleur Palettes that are embossed with roses on a tulle pattern $59 ea. The one, Garden Pastels may be difficult for most women over 40 to attempt to wear, but the other, Garden Roses may have a larger audience.  Both are fresh and spring-like in their own way.

In addition to the variety of shadows for the collection, there is a few new lipsticks and glosses and a nail lacquer duo that is rose scented and said to last up to 4 days after applying! $23 ea.

The lipsticks are lovely and soft spring shades.   The two lipsticks are in the Rouge Dior formula – a creamy longer wearing formula than Dior Addict. $32 ea.  The Ultra Gloss is available in Pretty Rose #452 and Party Lilac #396.  The rose is more of a coral rose and the lilac shade is a nice sheer shade.

And lastly, two other additions to the extensive Spring 2012 Collection are the new 3 Couleur palettes. I have not seen these in person yet, but the Smoky Roses (top) shades were highly missed when they released the 3 Couleur palettes last fall.  The Smoky Garden trio (below) is an online Dior.com exclusive.  I hope these are actually part of the permanent collection, but I have not heard for sure.

 

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this collection.  I think most of it is wearable for women over 40, and it’s soft, pretty, and fresh.  I suspect the minaudiere will be popular and one of the first items in the collection to sell out quickly.

How-to Restore Post-Holiday Hair

While the festive party season brings happy memories, gifts given and received, it also leaves us with a few less-than-desirable things, like thunder thighs and damaged hair! Most people hit the gym or start a diet to help them get back to their pre-holiday lifestyles, and there’s no reason that shouldn’t hold true for your hair as well. Here are my favorite products and tips to help you get lovely, lustrous and healthy locks:

Get a haircut.   Though it seems obvious, it’s really important to get a regular haircut.  For those afraid of hairdressers: there is simply no better cure for dry, damaged hair like a haircut—it’s really something that no other supposed miracle product can fake. The start of the new year is a great time to try out a new hairstyle, but if you’re not willing to take the plunge, simply ask for a trim. I know a lot of people try to grow out their hair and hate to lose any length, but those locks really won’t be healthy until you’ve had the damaged ends snipped off. There’s really no better feeling like bouncing out of the salon with the lightness of a fresh cut styled in a fabulous blow out!

If you’re not going to the salon, or even if you are, hair masks and deep conditioning treatments are something to think about for restoring moisture. While there are numerous hair masks on the market today, Davines Nou Nou Nourishing Repairing Mask ($25.20) is one of my favorites. The Italian brand can be a little hard to find, and it’s not the most pleasant-smelling (think sharp, mustard greens), but it works like nothing else. For a more intense treatment, I like to apply this to damp hair in the shower, clip it up, and then sleep with it in overnight with a towel draped over my pillow. It might be slightly uncomfortable to do but nothing gives my hair such moisture and shine.

Swap your leave-in product for an oil.  The consistency of each would lead you to believe that the cream is more hydrating, but I’ve found the oils to be much more moisturizing. These have really become popular in the last few years, and there are tons available at all different price points. My favorite, however, is the Maybach of hair oils:  Shu Uemura Essence Absolue ($65). Of course, you do not need to spend the money on this particular one, as most hair oils deliver that terrific dose of intense moisture, shine, and anti-frizz power. They’re also terrific for using as a treatment–just run a few more pumps of the product into dry hair and let it sit for a while before washing it out (I recommend shampooing twice—these oils are no joke). If you are going to use an oil in this way, however, I would suggest using a higher quality one as I’ve found that the ones available at drugstores don’t work well for this purpose.

A product designed for your ends. They’re absolutely essential for those looking to revive or prolong the health of their tips. They are the most vulnerable to dryness and damage, so they’re definitely worth looking after. If they’ve split already, you’ve gone past the point of no return, so go and get them trimmed off! But for preventative measures, I like the Bed Head Ego Boost ($15.50), but there are a lot of similar ones out there on the market. They even make some that are supposed to hide the look of split ends, but we’re going for health here, not the appearance of it.
