Welcome to Fab Over Forty New Year, New Nails with Zeva Natural Nails

A friend once said to me “One way to tell if a woman really takes care of herself is by looking at her hands”. Keeping nails neat and pristine is always on my top of priority lists, so it was with great excitement that I got to meet Mike, owner of Zeva Natural Nails.  He demonstrated some of the Zeva products on a mutual friend Kate, and I was instantly impressed with the Zeva products!

First he applied the Cuticle Oil Pen to the cuticles to soften them.  The cuticle pen is easy to use – just press the tip against the cuticles and it retracts to release an oil that is 100% natural.  It contains 16 natural oils including tocotrienol, a super-potent form of Vitamin E, which is 40-60 times more potent in preventing free radical damage. It also helps to prevent nail breakage. Some of the other ingredients include jojoba seed oil, tea tree oil, wheat germ oil, sesame oil, grape seed oil and many more.  The tip of the pen is strong enough to push back the cuticles as well.  I keep this pen next to my bed and use it nightly.  Although after the first couple of days it worked so well that I probably don’t need to continue to use it EVERY day.  But I love the scent – a mixture of the tea tree oil and almond oil comes through and smells divine.

Once done conditioning the cuticles, its time to move on to the Zeva Austrian Crystal file (shown above). This file is shaped so it’s a little larger on one end than the other, but the overall shape follows the curve of the base of the nail.  This is used for pushing back and removing excess cuticle. It’s made of pulverized Austrian crystal and pulverized ceramic.  It’s surprisingly very smooth, and is also used file the nail.  According to Mike, “the end of a fingernail will only be as smooth as the file you are using”.  When using this file, you can go in both directions without damaging the nail.  It gives the tips of your nails a smooth end so it “seals” them.  This also helps to prevent breakage of the nail.

Next, Mike used the three buffing files on Kate’s nails.  They’re clearly marked – #1 Cleaning, #2 Smoothing and #3 Finishing.  # 1 Cleans and removes ridges on the nail giving it a nice surface to use #2, which smooths the nail’s surface out.  #3 buffs the nails to a nice, clean shine.  All three of these buffing files have a different texture to them, but were all softer than I had imagined them being.  Kate’s nails looked amazing!

One last step that Mike did to Kate’s nails (hang nail was pre-manicure as Kate will attest to!) was to top them with the One Step French Manicure, which is shown on Kate’s finished nails.  It gives a nice finished look to the nails with a high shine that is slightly pink.  It’s not the typical dramatic pink/white French tip that many are accustomed to, but instead a very pretty “polished” pink flush look. The result is perfect for those who don’t want or like to use color on their nails, but yet want a nice looking manicure for their nails.

Overall, I was very impressed with the Zeva Natural Nails products!  There are additional products to the line like Nail Nourishing Cream, Orange Blossum polish remover pads, Nail Guard and more.  You can get the basic nail kit, which is shown above and includes the three buffing files, the Austrian Crystal File and the Cuticle Oil Pen all in a storage/travel case for only $45.  You can get some serious savings doing your manicures at home this year!  And, they don’t charge shipping on orders over $40. Love that!

“A California girl who has come to New York” inspired the hair, makeup and nails at the DKNY Spring 2012 show. The end result? Sun-kissed skin, bright eyes, beachy hair with lots of volume and bold, nude nails. Face Maybelline New York Global Makeup Artist Charlotte Willer prepped the skin with a lighter layer of [...]

Makeup, Hair, & Nails @ Erickson Beamon S/S 2012

WOW! The styling at Erickson Beamon was ridiculous–and I mean that in the best way! After seeing a lot of nude/neutral colors and looks at other shows, it’s such a breath of fresh air! I have a ton of photos to go through, so I’ll be updating this post in the next couple of hours with more (and I’m still working on getting a breakdown of what was used for the makeup).

Nonie from Butter London for Beauty.com created pops of color on the nails using a neon orange, chartreuse, magenta (with a little touch of shimmer), and teal. The magenta and teal shades are definitely part of the spring/summer collection but she hasn’t decided whether the other two will come out (I totally voted for chartreuse!). They put a different color on each fingernail and toenail. The backstage area was so cramped, there were Butter London team members sitting on the floor and crunched in some really awkward-looking positions!

PHYTO for Beauty.com was styling the hair, which was sleek and elegant twist around the crown of the head. It was designed to be understated, because the makeup and nails were already so bold and vibrant.

MAC was responsible for the makeup. Chantal Miller, MAC Senior Artist, was the key artist for the makeup look, and she used a lot of PRO products, like Paintsticks, Glitters, and Pigments. The models also wore hand-cut paper lashes, which the models said were odd at first but after a few minutes, they were used to them. Lots and lots of glitter along the brow bone and underneath the eye, as well as a bold lip with more glitter patted on top. It was a superstar team back there; I also spotted Senior Artists Fatima, Romero, and Neil (UK) at work. (Fatima even told me she reads Temptalia, which was totally a “No way!” moment for me.)

More swatches and pictures of London’s coolest nail brand nails inc.! This time we have two Nail Polishes and a Special Effects 3D Crackle Top Coat.

nails inc. Jermyn Street Islington Chelsea Square polishes
Jermyn Street is a creamy muted pinkish taupe/brown. It goes on very opaque and applies like a dream. If you like cream polishes, definitely check this one out!

Islington Pink Crackle is a flamingo pink crackle top coat. I was hoping for a cooler pink but it showed up more coral and is pretty nonetheless.

Chelsea Square is a clear polish decked with tons of rose glitter. It looks almost identical to my favorite China Glaze 80381 Glitter Nail Polish, only with small glitter particles. Similar to the nails inc. Special Effects 3D Glitter Nail Polishes I loved, you can get full coverage with just two coats.

Ever since I came cross Britain’s hippest nail brand nails inc. at Cosmoprof a few years ago, I have been lusting over their polishes and dying to get my hands on more. Now that the brand has officially launched at Sephora this month, the first to catch my eye was the Special Effects 3D Glitter Nail Polish.

Packed with two different particle sizes, the Special Effects 3D Glitter Nail Polish creates a textured 3D effect and full coverage on nails that is bound to make a statement. The polish is also formulated without parabens, sulfates, synthetic fragrances, phthalates, GMOs and triclosan.

There are four glitter-tastic shades available, each named after famous iconic places in the UK (how I miss London!)

Bloomsbury Square, a clear base with bold purple glitter and chunky magenta glitter.
Connaught Square, a clear base with royal blue glitter and chunky purple glitter.
Fitzroy Square, a clear base with green glitter and chunky teal glitter.
Sloane Square, a clear base with charcoal gray/silver glitter and chunky iridescent glitter.

Like nails inc.’s regular Polishes, these apply smoothly and evenly but with a strong chemical scene that I was not too fond of. With just one coat, it shows up almost clear with a tinge of color and lots of glitter. Add a second coat and voila! Full-on color and glitter that spells glamor.

The polishes dry relatively fast to a matte, gritty finish thanks to the glitter but once you add a top coat like my favorite nails nails inc. Kensington Caviar Top Coat, you will get a glossy finish that is simply stunning.

Another thing you gotta love about these polishes is the price. While they go for £11 (~US$18) a pop in the UK, Sephora only sells them for $9.50. Can we just say bargain?!
