Mad Men Season 5 Makeup Look Breakdowns

March 30th, 2012

Celebrity Makeup News and Blogs:

With the premiere of a new season of Mad Men, Lana Horochowski, Department Head of Makeup for the hit TV show, shares with us a few tips on how to recreate the gorgeous classic ’60s beauty looks of Megan Draper and Joan Harris!

Mad Men Season 5 Makeup Breakdown
“We looked at a lot of ‘60s magazines, and photos from my mother when she was young,” said Horochowski . “Overall, there are definitely a lot of makeup looks this season. It’s a new color palette entirely!”

Megan Draper (played by Jessica Paré)
“The inspiration for Megan Draper drew from a combination of Twiggy and Sophia Loren,” explains Horochowski. “We thought of French and Italian actresses who had iconic looks. Megan is a little more high fashion in her approach to makeup compared to the other girls because she’s a lot younger – their makeup stays pretty consistent.”

Party look: “It was so mod – we used NARS Heart of Glass Eyeshadow, a pale blue shade, not too shimmery, with NARS Thunderball Eyeshadow in the crease, which was drawn in a thick line, smudged slightly, but left heavy enough to be very mod. Like Twiggy. I lined her eyes with NARS Nuits Blanches Eyeliner Stylo. I used NARS Desire Blush on her cheeks, and NARS Belle de Jour Velvet Matte Lip Pencil on her lips.”

Office look: “She’s very basic in the office – very little foundation, a little black eyeliner, and NARS Dolce Vita Velvet Matte Lip Pencil every day. I also love to use NARS Madrague Duo Eyeshadow. In the first scene in the office, she’s wearing NARS Lili Marlene Cream Eyeshadow on the eyelid with Nuits Blanches Eyeliner Stylo applied in a thick black line.”

Joan Harris (played by Christina Hendricks)
“You don’t see her in the office too much in the first episode – she’s at her apartment where she’s not wearing much makeup. Just a swipe of NARS Dolce Vita Blush; and on her lips we like to apply NARS Pop Life Velvet Matte Lip Pencil but blotted down to a stain, or NARS Dolce Vita Velvet Matte Lip Pencil.”

And to keep the actresses’ skin perfect? Lana swears by Koh Gen Do Aqua Foundation. “I am obsessed with the Koh Gen Do Aqua Foundation. It creates a flawless canvas on all ages and skin types.  I love its durability on set and that after an 18 hour shoot day my actors never complain about their makeup feeling too heavy or cakey.”

Can’t get enough of Mad Men? Remember to check out the Estee Lauder x Mad Men Collection as well!

You can find NARS at narscosmetics.com and Koh Gen Do at sephora.com.

Do other people’s opinions on your makeup influence you?

March 10th, 2012

Celebrity Makeup News and Blogs:

Do other people’s opinions on your makeup influence you? If so, to what degree? If not, what do you say?

If I know I’m going to a family function or to my parents’ all day long, I don’t make a big to-do with makeup. My parents are totally supportive of the blog, and so they wouldn’t have a problem if I showed up in full, dramatic makeup, but I know they like me better au natural.

Thanks to Jayna for today’s question! Have a question idea? Submit yours here.

Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes Review & Photos

March 7th, 2012

Celebrity Makeup News and Blogs:

Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes

Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes ($7.99 for 25 or $0.32 each) are pre-soaked cloths that are designed to remove makeup, including waterproof mascara. Neutrogena says there’s no need to rinse after using one of these to remove your makeup. This kind of product is great for on-the-go removal (say at the gym), overnight bags/weekend trips (where you may not want to use liquid makeup remover or have it clogging up space in your quart-sized carry-on liquids’ bag!), or if you’re someone who isn’t so good at removing makeup before going to bed.

Generally, I use a liquid makeup remover to take off my makeup at night, because I usually enjoy my night time skin care routine, so it’s not a chore for me. However, I always pack wipes with me when I travel on short trips, whether by plane or car. I also use makeup wipes for spot makeup removal and if I’m wearing a really strong lip color, then I’ll use one to remove the majority of makeup and finish with a regular cleanser.

There are a lot of times where I will do several swatches in a row–say blush–and a wipe is easy and fuss-free to just remove the area I applied blush in. This keeps the rest of my face looking the same, and then I can just reapply foundation and then the blush on top. Neutrogena’s Towelettes do an excellent job at removing makeup and leaving the surface mostly matte and ready for the next swatch. The towelette is soft to the touch, and it’s thick enough to hold plenty of moisture (the cleanser) and stretches easily without tearing. I love that my skin doesn’t feel dry or tight after using it.

What’s shown in photos is technically a refill package, and you are expected to purchase your first batch of wipes in a plastic container ($8.99 for 25 plus the case). If you don’t use wipes often, you’ll want the case or to store these in a zip-top plastic bag to ensure they stay moist. I usually don’t have issues with the refill packaging staying sealed (it is adhesive), but over time, the adhesive can weaken. One thing I like to do is to store them upside down, because this helps to ensure the wipe that’s next in line to be used is very moist. If you do have a wipe that’s dried out or not as moist as it should be, you can add a little bit of your favorite cleanser or even just water to rejuvenate it a bit!  These are also heavily scented with a fresh, clean floral-like scent.

I really like these, and if you aren’t someone who uses wipes often, they’re a good, easy-to-find, budget-friendly option. I don’t buy these regularly, just because I like MAC’s Wipes better for my purposes (removing swatches usually), and I go through them frequently, so I buy the Bulk Wipes ($28.00 for 100 or $0.28 each). I prefer MAC Wipes for removing swatches, because they are more moisturizing, and when you’re removing makeup from the same patch of skin 10-20 times over a couple of hours, regular wipes often leave the area dry, scaly, and irritated. But what’s funny is that MAC Wipes do leave behind a slightly slick feeling after use–not really oily or slick per se, but what keeps my arm hydrated during a major swatch session is a noticeable feeling on the face, which you may or may not appreciate. I also can’t use MAC Wipes on the eyes (and they’re not recommended for use on the eye area last I checked!) without the skin feeling like it’s on fire.

Celebrity Hair & Makeup: Shailene Woodley at 2012 Oscars

March 6th, 2012

Celebrity Makeup News and Blogs:

Need hair and makeup ideas to go with a white dress? Take a cue from Shailene Woodley, who totally nailed the look at the 84th Annual Academy Awards with a Valentino Couture gown, sultry coppery shadow and chic chignon.

Makeup
“Today is a special day for Shailene and so I wanted to use a little more makeup than what she typically wears,” says makeup artist Stephen Sollitto working for Hourglass Cosmetics. “Her look is about luminous skin, defined eyes and a sophisticated palette of coppers and bronzes. She looked exquisite yet still young, fresh and fashionable.”

Stephen began by prepping Shailene’s skin with Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer to create a smooth canvas for makeup and ensure a flawless finish with real longevity. He followed with Hourglass Illusion Tinted Moisturizer in Shell, which imbues skin with luminosity, and Hidden Corrective Concealer in Fair, an undetectable cover-up.

To add warmth, he contoured Shailene’s cheekbones with Hourglass Superficial Waterproof Bronzer, a silky powder that withstands high humidity, sweeping the product to her temples, hair line, nose and chin. He then applied a dusty rose blush and finished with the highlighter from Hourglass Illume Crème-to-Powder Bronzer Duo in Bronze Light for a gorgeous glow.

Stephen lined her eyes with Hourglass Calligraphy Liquid Eye Liner in Cognac, a rich brown shade. Before adding eye shadow, Stephen applied Hourglass Film Noir Full Spectrum Mascara to gauge the darkness of her eyes. He also swept Hourglass Film Noir Lash Lacquer at the roots of the lashes for drama, thickness and inky black sheen. Stephen then covered the entire lid of the eye with the cream shimmer shade of Hourglass Visionaire Eye Shadow Duo in Suede to reflect light. Last, he applied the copper shade from Hourglass Visionaire Eye Shadow Duo in Gypsy for a dose of dramatic color.

Stephen lined the lips with Hourglass Trace Lip Liner in Bare, and followed with Hourglass Prodigy Hydrating Lip Gloss in Eden for a peachy beige sheen.

Hair
Hair stylist Campbell McAuley gave Shailene a ’70s style textured chignon with a Moroccan twist to mirror the textures of her dress.

1. Starting with wet hair, apply Matrix Total Results Amplify Wonder Boost Root Lifter to give the base of the hair volume.

2. Blowdry hair with a round brush to smooth the texture.

3. Set hair in Velcro rollers for one hour.

4. Remove rollers, brush out curls and worked Matrix Total Results Sleek Silk Wonder Smoothing Oil from roots to end for shine.

5. Gather all hair into a textured ponytail at the crown of the head.

6. Twist small sections of the ponytail and wrap them up to the base of the hair to make a round shape.

7. Half way through, wrap remaining sections around the round shape to give it a criss-cross texture.

8. Finish with Matrix Design Pulse Hard Lock Hairspray to hold the style in place.

Nails
For Shailene’s nails, Celebrity Manicurist Nettie Davis used a mix of essie’s Ballet Slippers and Au Natural to create a light, neutral manicure. “I wanted to create a simple nail to complement Shailene’s mod 70s style dress. I created a neutral beige mixing Ballet Slippers and Au Natural,” stated Davis.
