FOTD: Tropical Eye Makeup and Glitter Fuchsia Lip with Adriana

July 29th, 2011

Celebrity Makeup News and Blogs:

Over the weekend, I met with Bulgarian beauty Adriana for a shoot. She was super cool and open to colors, and when she picked out a pair of blue polka-dot lashes from my Halloween collection, I decided to go all the way with a glitter fuchsia lip and tropical colors on the eyes. Definitely not your everyday look but fun and great for the summer nonetheless. Thanks so much for the good time Adriana! =)

What is the first beauty brand you remember using?

June 21st, 2011

Celebrity Makeup News and Blogs:

What is the first beauty brand you remember using? Do you have good memories of it? Bad?

MAC made me fall in love with makeup — it was MAC pigments (which could have very well been fake MAC pigments, actually, given I bought them off of eBay), and it was pretty much a downward spiral from there.

Thanks to Arian for today’s question!

Real Techniques by Samantha Chapman/pixiwoo Travel Essentials Makeup Brush Set Review and Photos

June 2nd, 2011

Celebrity Makeup News and Blogs:

British makeup artist Samantha Chapman, aka YouTube guru pixiwoo to most of us, has launched Real Techniques, a 10-piece makeup brush collection that claims to help you look pixel-perfect even in harsh light.

I have the Travel Essentials Set, which comes with an Essential Foundation Brush, Multi-task Brush, Domed Shadow Brush – all made with 100% cruelty-free, hand-cut synthetic taklon bristles- along with a panoramic black brush case that doubles as a stand.

The Essential Foundation Brush is about the same size as my favorite MAC #190 Foundation Brush. Just like the MAC, the bristles are very dense yet soft to the touch. It works beautifully with both liquid and cream foundations without soaking up too much product and always leaves behind a streakless finish.

The Multi-task Brush is a medium-sized fluffy brush, again with really soft bristles. Since I prefer a smaller brush for the cheeks, I save this for applying powder/bronzer all over and to sweep off excess product and it does a brilliant job.

The Domed Shadow Brush is a medium-sized brush with a tapered design to smoothly shade and define the eyes. The bristles are similar to that of the foundation brush – dense yet gentle on the skin – and work great for applying both powder and cream eyeshadows on the eyelid.

Another cool thing about these brushes is their extended aluminum handles. Not only do they feel light and rest nicely on my hand, they are color-coded to correspond to the key steps of makeup application. Orange is for creating a flawless base, purple is for enhancing the eyes and pink is for adding the perfect finish. You can also find the name of each brush printed on the back of the handle, making them perfect for newbies as well.

Finally, despite the super affordable price tag (everything is under $18!), these brushes are very durable. They do not shed or splay and still look brand new even after a few washes. Thumbs up overall!

Overall Rating:

Real Techniques by Samantha Chapman is available at Ulta stores and Ulta.com.

Makeup Tutorial: How To Get Babydoll’s Makeup Look From Sucker Punch

April 7th, 2011

Celebrity Makeup News and Blogs:

In fantasy movie “Sucker Punch”, lead makeup artist Rosalina Da Silva created some very droolicious makeup looks that involved a lot of “glamour, color, lashes, glitter and crystals”. My favorite out of them all? Babydoll, played by Emily Browning.

Sucker Punch Babydoll makeup tutorial

Inspired by Brigitte Bardot with a splash of Anime characters, Babydoll’s look is “sweet, innocent but at the same time very fearless” and all about a 60s eyeliner, long-full lashes and nude lips.

Face
To get Babydoll’s smooth, dewy skin, Rosalina airbrushed various brands of foundations – Armani, Kevin Aucoin, Kett and Kryolan – on. For every day, just use a foundation with a dewy finish and spray your face with MAC Fix+.

Eyes
The eyes are definitely my favorite part of this look. Start by applying a shimmery eyeshadow all over the eyelid. Darken the crease with a dark brown color. Using a black liquid or gel eyeliner (MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack was used on set), draw a thick line along the upper lashline and finish with a flick at the outer corner. Apply several coats of black mascara and a pair of thick fake lashes (Emily wore 3 pairs in the movie) on top. Finish by dabbing a highlighting color right by the tear duct to really create that doe-eyed look.

Cheeks
Rosy pink cheeks help add to the innocence of Babydoll’s look. Smile big before sweeping a pink blush on the apples. Dab a highlighting color right on top of the apples to really make them pop.

Lips
Run a lip pencil along your lip line for a defined shape. Apply a lipstick that matches with your blush and top with a clear gloss.
