Does your makeup routine change during the winter? Not skin care but makeup! If so, how so?

I reach for bolder lip colors, more lip balm (that’s not really skin care, is it? hmm!), and I take care to make sure I never look powdery, since my skin sometimes gets drier in the winter so my normal powder usage might look off!

What kind of makeup remover formula do you prefer? Oil, gel, cream, mousse, lotion, wipe? Something else? Why?

For intense lip products, I like makeup remover wipes, because it takes it right off and there is no scrubbing involved. For intense eye looks, I like dual-phase removers like Lancome Bi-Facil, because it gets everything off without a fuss. Generally, I use a cleansing oil (like shu uemura’s), which works well to get most makeup off (even intense eye or lip makeup) but may not get into the nooks and crannies.

NARS Holiday 2011 Gifting

For Holiday 2011, NARS introduces Modern Kabuki, a collection of specially designed gifts for the ardent makeup aficionado, inspired by François Nars’ travels throughout Japan, his deep interest in Japanese culture, and his fascination with Kabuki makeup. The collection captures the exquisite artistry of Japan’s Kabuki theater. Every detail is a vibrant, modern, iconic interpretation of the centuries-old dramatic form.

Hanamichi Kabuki-Inspired Eyeshadow Palette ($65.00) (narscosmetics.com)

Japanese for “flower path,” this Kabuki theater walkway that extends into the audience was the inspiration for this eyeshadow palette, featuring a Kabuki-themed design and accompanied by a mini Kabuki Eye Brush. The colors are evocative of shades found in Kabuki theater- an icy white with flowers in rich shimmering deep rose and gold and matte black.

Kudoki Kabuki Mini Lip Coffret ($125.00)

Named for an element of Kabuki dance, this year’s take on the Bento Box set features three new vibrant, super-saturated, limited edition shades poured into custom ceramic cups. Included is its own Kabuki Lip Brush and sleek keepsake wooden box.

  • Ougi Deep red
  • Takebue Neutral
  • Botan Deep pink

Mie Kabuki Mini Soft Touch Shadow Pencil Coffret ($55.00)

A collection of six mini, top-selling and limited edition Soft Touch Shadow Pencils. Just like their namesake Mie Kabuki— which references a moment of high emotion culminating in an extremely dramatic pose—these creamy, blendable, long-wearing crayons create bold, dramatic looks with just a few strokes.

  • Tall Tale Deep metallic purple
  • Magic Moon Deep metallic navy blue
  • Ballets Russes Silver
  • Aigle Noir Black infused with gold shimmer
  • Palladium Turquoise with silver glitter
  • Skorpios Copper

Kuroko Kabuki Mini Nail Polish Coffret ($35.00)

The set includes four mini-sized, bold and vivid nail polish colors based on shades traditionally used in Kabuki theatre.

  • Yoshiwara Red
  • Shiro-Nuri White
  • Kata Black
  • Senryou Gold

Nagauta Kabuki Brush Set ($225.00) (Barneys Exclusive)

Encased in an ultra-luxurious keepsake wooden bento box with red lacquer interior, this exquisite five-piece brush set is named for the principal musical forms in Kabuki theater and includes two new brushes exclusive to the set. Kabuki Eye Brush (exclusive to the set), Botan Brush, Ita Brush, Yachiyo Brush, Kabuki Lip (exclusive to the set).

availability: November 1st, 2011 @ narscosmetics.com (except brush set)

Autumn Must-Have Makeup

As summer winds down and the temperatures begin to decline, autumn enters, along with a shift in must-have makeup products (or trends, since I didn’t make specific recommendations).  Here are my three for this fall:

The Dark Lip is a fall trend that never gets old and never goes out of style. It must be the cooler temps that make us reach for those cooler, darker berries and plums–and for those of us who are more daring, our truly vampy shades. There are two essential tricks to wearing and pulling off a darker lip: confidence and technique.

You gotta have the confidence to rock the bold lip–this means throwing out any preconceived notions you have of how you look in a dark lip. We get stuck seeing ourselves in a certain way, but trust me, others see us in less of a box! You look killer in your crushed berry lip stain! (And if you need to build-up your confidence level, wear it around the house and good friends.) Secondly, technique is important; you want to take your time and apply a darker lip color with a lip brush when possible, and lining around the lip (with a colorless lip liner or concealer) and on the edge of lip will give you a very crisp, precise lip look as well as longer-lasting color that’s less prone to bleeding. Keep in mind that adding gloss on top of a dark lipstick often increases the chance it will bleed.

The Plum Blush adds color but also definition to cheeks–and it’s an interesting way to switch-up your usual makeup routine. It’s also nice way to embrace some of the more somber tones of autumn that we see so often on lips but on the cheeks. On cooler complexions, I love pinkish plums, while on warmer complexions, brownish plums work well. It can be applied heavily or softly, depending on your preference, and softer, finer textures allow for a really blendable, sheered out looks, while denser products will yield greater intensity in a single pass.

The Matte Lip is back with a vengeance this fall, but we’ll be seeing different twists and takes on what exactly matte means. They’re just not your old school dry-as-a-bone kind of mattes any more. Thank goodness for the improvements in formulas, ingredients, and technology, because we can now achieve matte lips without chalkiness, dryness, or excessive pulling and tugging. Keep your eyes open for some of those new formulas launching in the next month or so!

What are your must-have products for autumn?
