Toxic Halloween makeup – should you be afraid?

Celebrity Makeup News and Blogs:

Post image for Toxic Halloween makeup – should you be afraid?

In this weeks’s Beauty Brains show we discussed the Huff Po article on toxic makeup. Here’s a transcript (or at least a summary) of the points we covered.

1. “Because of the fact that the cosmetics industry is not regulated by the FDA, there are no laws based on levels that are safe for makeup.”

Truth: Consumer advocacy groups frequently claim that the cosmetic industry is unregulated. This is false. The regulatory framework for the cosmetic industry was set up in 1938 with the passage of the Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. This created the FDA which is who regulates the cosmetic industry.

2. “Lead is banned from makeup in both Canada and Europe but it’s allowed AT ANY LEVEL in makeup in the U.S.”

Truth: The Cosmetics Directive in the European Union specifically bans lead as an ingredient while in the US lead is NOT included as an approved ingredient in the Cosmetic Dictionary. In other words, lead is not allowed as an ingredient in EITHER country. (The exception in the US is lead acetate which is allowed as a color additive but products containing this ingredient must be clearly with the following warning statement: “CAUTION: Contains lead acetate. For external use only.”)

It’s also true in both the US and EU that cosmetics contain trace amounts of lead – there’s a big difference between adding lead as an ingredient and having trace amounts of lead present as in impurity.

3. “…there are numerous other paths of exposure [to lead] and makeup is a critical one.”

Truth: According to the American Cancer Society, the main routes of exposure to lead are breathing and ingestion. Other than the exception of kohl eye makeup, which is known to contain high amounts of lead (and which is NOT allowed in the US), makeup is not cited as a “critical” concern for lead exposure. If you’re really worried about protecting children from lead then don’t let them eat any candy (which is allowed by the FDA to contain up to 0.5 ppm of lead) or drink tap water (which is allowed by the EPA to contain up to 15 ppb lead.) Since candy and water are directly ingested, the potential for lead exposure is MUCH greater from these sources than from makeup which is poorly absorbed by skin, if at all.

4. “Since we absorb as much as 80 percent of what goes on our skin, the precautionary principal tells us it’s not smart to coat ourselves with things containing lead.”

Truth: In reality our skin is an effective barrier against most materials and very little of what is applied topically actually makes it through the skin into the blood. The notion that 80% of whatever goes on skin is absorbed is not accurate.

5. “Lead in lipstick has been a known issue for years and the FDA continues to do periodic tests which only show more lead in lipstick…”

Truth: Actually last two studies (using the method validated by the FDA) show a consistent amount of lead present in lipstick, not “more” lead. The first study, from 2009 showed an average of 1.07 ppm while the most recent study 2012 showed 1.11 ppm. From a statistical perspective this is not an increase in lead.

The bottom line
Let’s be clear: lead poisoning IS a serious problem. But the amount of lead and other potentially dangerous materials in cosmetics is controlled through a combination of government restrictions and industry self-regulation. Lead is not allowed as an ingredient in the US or the EU but it is allowed in cosmetics at trace levels. These amounts of lead are very low and the amount of that lead that enters our bodies from these products is even less. Therefore the risk of lead poisoning from cosmetics is VERY low. Our kids are exposed to greater amounts of lead from candy and water than from makeup.

Dior National Artist Jeffrey Sanchez, Favorite Beauty Products and Makeup Tips

August 5th, 2011

Celebrity Makeup News and Blogs:

<img class=”size-full wp-image-18314 aligncenter” title=”Jeffrey Sanchez” src=”http://www.faboverforty.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/DSC_0012-531×800.jpg” alt=”” width=”319″ height=”480″/>

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure and honor to work with Dior National Makeup Artist, Jeffrey Sanchez. Whenever I have the opportunity to meet a national artist from a beauty line I take advantage of it when I can. A person can learn so much from them even if it’s one tip it’s usually a priceless one. So my advice to you – if you want to learn more about how to apply your makeup and if you walk away just learning one thing, it is well worth it.

<img class=”aligncenter size-medium wp-image-18317″ title=”Jeffrey’s makeup bag” src=”http://www.faboverforty.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/DSC_0067-300×199.jpg” alt=”” width=”300″ height=”199″/>

I’m always curious what a national artist such as Jeffrey, carries in their makeup bag – the bag of magical must-haves as I call it. Jeffrey travels nearly every week of the year – quite a schedule! So what he uses has to work not only for him as an artist, but product that he knows will work for his clients too.

Alongside his <a rel=”nofollow” target=”_blank” href=”http://www.dior.com/beauty/usa/en/make_up_and_cosmetics_by_christian_dior_lipstick_m/accessories/accessories/lbrushes.html “>Dior brushes that are a staple in his makeup bag, he has a few other Dior products that happen to be some of my favorites as well! I overheard Jeffrey telling someone why the Dior eyeliner brush is better and different than most – the edges are tapered to be able to move the brush from side to side as well as straight on to be able to get product wherever it is needed. Most eyeliner brushes are flat or straight without tapered edges so you have to put the product straight onto the lash line rather than being able to move your wrist around and follow the natural curve of the eye.

Some other products that are favorites are <a rel=”nofollow” target=”_blank” href=” http://www.dior.com/beauty/usa/en/make_up_and_cosmetics_by_christian_dior_lipstick_m/face/concealers/y0880600/py0880600.html”>Skinflash Primer - I agree with this one as well, it’s my all-time favorite primer and I’ve written about it here on <a rel=”nofollow” target=”_blank” href=” http://www.faboverforty.com/beauty/dior-skinflash-primer/”>Fab Over 40 before. It leaves your skin radiant and soft and on the days you don’t want to wear any foundation, it evens out the skin to give it a flawless look on its own. Jeffrey said he likes to mix it with a little bit of Skinflash or Nude Concealer where needed.

<a rel=”nofollow” target=”_blank” href=”http://www.dior.com/beauty/usa/en/make_up_and_cosmetics_by_christian_dior_lipstick_m/eyes/eyebrows/ultra-fine-precision-brow-pencil/py0726130.html “>Brow Styler is also another product he uses on everyone. Nearly all of us can use help in the brow area, whether it’s just filling in a little sparse area or helping them to look more full overall, and the Brow Styler works for all brow shades. I’ve also written about this in the past, <a rel=”nofollow” target=”_blank” href=” http://www.faboverforty.com/beauty/dior-brow-styler-how-does-it-rate/”>here. My own little side story on this product – I recently spent the weekend with my sisters and we were doing makeup applications one morning and I used this on one of my sisters who over time has over plucked her brows and now they don’t grow in (a common mishap). The rest of my family kept on commenting on how having her brows filled in changed the whole look of her face and how much better and natural her brows looked. So ladies – brows do make a huge difference!

A third must-have product he always carries in his makeup bag is <a rel=”nofollow” target=”_blank” href=” http://www.dior.com/beauty/usa/en/make_up_and_cosmetics_by_christian_dior_lipstick_m/lips/gloss/the-expert-gloss/spin-on-lacquer-smoothing-glow/py0027090.html”>Dior Addict Lip Polish. It’s a gloss with a soft-as-silk formula and the sponge tip rolls along the lips so it glides on easily. One of the things I love about Dior glosses is that they are never, ever sticky or tacky. Jeffrey especially likes this on women over 40 as it glides over the lips, even if you have lip lines there are microspheres that plump up and pull out the fine lines and cracks.

One item we didn’t discuss, but I noticed he used on nearly every one is the <a rel=”nofollow” target=”_blank” href=” http://www.dior.com/beauty/usa/en/make_up_and_cosmetics_by_christian_dior_lipstick_m/eyes/eyeliner/long-wear-waterproof-eyeliner-pencil/py0803050.html”>Crayon Waterproof Eyeliner in Trinidad Black. This liner is very smooth and creamy and stays put!

A few of Jeffrey’s favorite skin care products are the <a rel=”nofollow” target=”_blank” href=”http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=549259&CategoryID=8424#fn=sp%3D1%26spc%3D35 “>Capture Totale Radiance Enhancer, which he absolutely loves! It gives a glow to the skin, which is so important. The skin looks healthy and it neutralizes irregularities in the skin. It helps prevent oxidation of skin cells which in turn helps your skin cells to live longer – which gives your skin that healthy glow. It also helps to take the redness out of the skin.

<a rel=”nofollow” target=”_blank” href=” http://www.dior.com/beauty/usa/en/skin_care_by_christian_dior_face_care_body_care_su/face-skincare/global_anti_ageing_skincare/capturetotaledaynight/y0623535/py0623535.html”>Capture Totale Night Creme – he also swears by Capture Totale Creme during the day, but especially loves the night cream. It contains 3 x the potency of Vitamin C and night cream is specific to working with our body’s natural repairative state. I use this and love it. It’s very hydrating and the texture is amazing. I can definitely tell on my skin when I’ve skipped using this.

I asked Jeffrey for a few tips for women over 40 and here’s what he had to offer:

If someone tells a woman over 40 she can’t wear shimmer on her eyes it is FALSE! In fact he’s adamant about using it. Dior’s shimmer in their eyeshadows isn’t harsh and it’s made to look like more of a glow. It gives the eye area a healthier, smoother look. When I asked him about glittery shadows he said you can even get away with it as well, just respect the amount you are applying. That statement really stuck with me on many levels of beauty products – respect the amount you are applying. I may steal that saying as my new mantra!

Jeffrey suggested that women should not be afraid of lining under the eyes – it can make the eye look bigger, too. Just make it a soft line rather than a harsh line.

<img class=”aligncenter size-medium wp-image-18319″ title=”Lip Color” src=”http://www.faboverforty.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/DSC_0087-300×199.jpg” alt=”” width=”300″ height=”199″/>

Jeffrey also loves to use color on the lips especially for summer. These are some of his favorite shades from the<a rel=”nofollow” target=”_blank” href=” http://www.dior.com/beauty/usa/en/make_up_and_cosmetics_by_christian_dior_lipstick_m/lips/lipsticks/dior-addict/y0028600/py0028600.html”> Dior Addict Lipstick line – from top – 635 Miami, 682 Gibraltar and 750 Rock & Roll.

He also said that there is no way that one rule applies to every single person. Do what is right for you and don’t be afraid to experiment with something you haven’t tried before – you may be surprised!

Thanks Jeffrey! I know I learned some wonderful things from you and I think the Fab Over Forty readers have as well!
