Beauty Can Be Taxing

April 15th, 2012

Celebrity Makeup News and Blogs:

Post image for Beauty Can Be Taxing

Since today is “Tax Day” here in the US I thought I’d reprint our post from a few years ago that listed tax related beauty items that sort of, kind of have to do with science. A little bit.

1. Modeling + makeup = money!

If you’re a model you can deduct certain makeup and some clothing items. Project Runway, here I come!

2. Surgery for sale

Cosmetic surgery is not tax deductible if its sole purpose is to make you more attractive. Ironic, huh? And speaking of surgery…

3. Trans-taxable

In 2005, the IRS eliminated the deduction for having transgender surgery. I guess they figured losing your penis was enough of a deduction!

4. Got Makeup?

If you’re like me, you’ll occasionally pick up some products and then never get around to using them. So if you have unopened cosmetics hiding in a closet somewhere collect them up and donate to a women’s shelter for a tax deduction. (Check with your accountant on this one first, I’m a Beauty Brain, not a Tax Brain!)

5. Looking for extra income?

If you sign up to sell Mary Kay cosmetics, the $100 starter kit fee you have to pay for is tax deductible! The good news is you’ll end up a with a lot of Mary Kay cosmetics. The bad news is that you’ll end up with a lot of Mary Kay cosmetics.

6. Those wacky Aussies, Part I

If you live in Australia you can deduct cosmetics provided it’s a necessary part of your job. For example, if you’re an actor you can deduct the cost of maintaining your hairstyle or the cost of stage makeup. You can NOT, however, deduct the cost of cleansing products for skin conditions. Unless of course you have the occupation described in our next item…

7. Those wacky Aussies, Part II

Those wacky Aussies! If you’re an Australian stripper you can deduct not only makeup and makeup removers but also costumes and lingerie as well as. I bet you think there’s NO place else on Earth that gives you a deal like that! Well you’re wrong. Keep reading…

8. Those crazy Canadians

In Canada, sex workers (a somewhat dubious occupational category that includes strippers, prostitutes and porn stars) can deduct not only cosmetics but also clothing, condoms, cosmetic surgery and even “implements.” They get to deduct implements!

9. Save but don’t skimp

Ok, unless you’re willing to live in Australia or Canada and work in the “adult entertainment” business, you’re probably worried about spending too much on cosmetics and not getting a tax break. You might feel better if you read these important reasons to NOT skimp on your appearance.

10. Don’t worry, be a hottie

What? You’re still worried about spending too much on beauty products? Ok, here’s our last tip: check out these 10 ways to look hot without breaking the bank.

Have Your Cake and Some Grape Seed Too!

January 6th, 2012

Celebrity Makeup News and Blogs:

Welcome to Fab Over Forty Have Your Cake and Some Grape Seed Too!

Have you heard of Cake Plate?  If you live in the Napa Valley region, you know it is the hot spot boutique of fashion, accessories and now 29 Cosmetics.  Owned by Lindsay Kroll and her stylist sister Paige Smith, they’ve created a fun boutique where fashion is served with a side of fabulousness and a heaping portion of fun in downtown Napa Valley.  Don’t live there or don’t have plans to get there any time soon?  Too bad, because Napa should be on everyone’s bucket list, but you can get to Cake Plate via their fun website.

Be sure to check out the 29 Cosmetics line they are now carrying in their store too.  A perfect fit with Cake Plate in Napa Valley.  29 Cosmetics bases their skincare and beauty products on the goodness of grape seed.  And why wouldn’t they – it’s owned by Lydia Mondavi, of the Mondavi wine family.

I’ve used a few of the 29 products and discussed them before on Fab Over 40 and their skincare benefits. Truly wonderful.

Now I’ve had the opportunity to test the  29 Cosmetics Dew Grape Seed Age Protecting Lip Gloss, and few beauty products “wow” me the way this does.  I have been raving to friends about this gloss since first trying it.  I figured it would be like most other glosses – tacky texture, sheer coverage – you know the drill. I was completely taken by surprise! This gloss isn’t like the others that I have tried. It is a gloss that comes in a tube, but the coverage is more full than most glosses and the texture is amazing.  It’s like a soft, creamy, cushiony balm, not a sticky gloss in the least bit.  Chock full of anti-oxidant grape seed extract, it’s nourishing and protecting against environmental damage.  The glosses also contain SPF 15, a must for protecting our lips.  Dew Grape Seed Age Protecting Lip Gloss is a definite must-try for 2012.

Thanks for reading Fab Over Forty. Please feel free to contact me. You’ll find my information on the “About” page on Fab Over Forty. Fab Over Forty

7 Tried & True Must-Have Products

I’m a sucker for multi-purpose products: pigments, cream and liquid paints, mixing mediums, etc. I like to custom-blend just about everything! Not everyone feels the same way, though, and sometimes, it’s nice to have one product that does a job and does it well. These are some of my tried-and-true favorites from a few different companies (hopefully some that you haven’t heard of before)!

Estée Lauder Pure Color Lipstick | Their Long Lasting Cream finishes are some of the best lipsticks I own. They cover well and feel luxurious on the lips. The BEST ones are almost always limited edition. Favorites in the Permanent Range: Cherry Passion, Melon and Rose Tea.

Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tars | I’m actually not a huge fan of these on the lips, but, OH, the blushes these make! They last forever and blend like a dream (they DO have mint in them though so avoid the eye area). Favorites: Cha-Cha and Divine.

Face Atelier Ultra Sheer | I love these liquid luminizers because you can mix them with foundation, cream blush or bronzer for glowing skin or apply them on their own (I use a fluffy blush brush) for a natural highlighting effect. Favorites: Champagne.

Terra Firma Gel Mineral Matte Finish Bronzer | I use this on myself all the time. It’s highly pigmented (I dilute it with body lotion), long-wearing, won’t rub off on clothes and looks SO amazingly natural – If most bronzers are too orange for you, look no further! (There’s also a shimmering version if you like to twinkle.)

MAC Reflects Glitters | A MAC PRO exclusive (but anyone can buy from MAC PRO). I’ve used these in a multitude of ways: mixing custom lip gloss, over mascara for sparkling lashes, on top of just any eye look, pressed over lipstick for a metallic foil effect, as a face and body highlight, worked into a hairstyle, etc. Not many things are THIS pretty! (Be aware that MAC lists these products as “not for use in the eye area.”) Favorites: Reflects Bronze, Reflects Gold and Reflects Transparent Teal.

MAC Blot Powder and Purely Cosmetics Diamond Perfect Finish Powder | My two favorite setting powders! Blot Powder by MAC is perfect for mattifying a look without adding any color or texture. Diamond Perfect Finish Powder by Purely Cosmetics is a transparent loose powder that easily outperforms the transparent powders I have from MAC and MUFE (smoother application, better line diffusing AND it doesn’t bounce light back in photography).

Flirt! Cosmetics Big Flirt Sheer and Shiny Lipgloss Review, Swatches, Photos and Giveaway

July 21st, 2011

Celebrity Makeup News and Blogs:

To embrace the iconic style of the early 1960’s where everything was big and sexy, Flirt! Cosmetics created Big Flirt Sheer and Shiny Lipgloss, the flirtiest, shiniest and boldest lipgloss yet.

The first thing that caught my eye was the humongous yet cute packaging. With its black cap and mega-tip applicator, the Big Flirt Sheer and Shiny Lipgloss looks like a jumbo, polka-dot version of MAC Tinted Lipglass.

The lipgloss is formulated with jojoba oil to help soften and condition lips and applies smoothly with a sweet, vanilla scent. I personally don’t find it to be that moisturizing on my super dry lips but I do like that it is creamy and does not feel too tacky.

There are 8 wearable colors in both cream and shimmer finishes, including:

Berry Bombshell – a sheer dark purple
Bigger Than Rose – a plum with golden shimmer
Big Pink Sunshine – a golden pink
Coral-Me Fabulous – a creamy coral
Big Pink Kisses – a creamy bubblegum pink
Big Blush – a shimmery medium pink
Big On Nude – a shimmery pinky peach
Big On Beige – a shimmery golden beige

The colors all show up semi-sheer with lots of shine just as the name suggests, so you will need to layer a bit to get the color you see in the tube. The gloss also stays on pretty well, even after a drink. Below are swatches of Big Pink Kisses and Bigger Than Rose:

Overall, Flirt! Cosmetics Big Flirt Sheer and Shiny Lipgloss is a fun, cute product that is easy to use and perfect for just a tinge of color and shine.

Overall Rating:

Flirt! Cosmetics Big Flirt Sheer and Shiny Lipgloss will be available at Kohl’s department stores nationwide and in August for $15.50.

To try this product before anyone else, just leave a comment with your name and e-mail address by July 23rd. I will be giving away Berry Bombshell, Big Pink Sunshine, Coral-Me Fabulous, Big Blush, Big On Nude and Big On Beige to three lucky readers.
